Basketball A Sport For Every Age

Even though that you've never been a sports fan, you've probably still played a little basketball. It's a perfect sport, really, as basketball can be played by people of every age, in any part of the world, with just a couple of people or a whole group. You can even enjoy basketball by yourself if you want to. Obviously, you need quite a few people gathered together in teams to play an "official" game of basketball. But basketball can be enjoyed outside the b-ball court, as well, and can be a great way to simply get some exercise while honing basic motor skills and hand-eye coordination. These aspects make basketball a great sport to get your kids started in when they are very young. Don't limit them to waiting to try out for the school basketball team-you can get your kids started learning the skills imparted by basketball from the time they can walk; possibly even before that.

Backyard Basketball

The beauty of basketball is that you don't have to have access to a fancy court or expensive equipment, as you do with some other popular sports. All you need to enjoy a little basketball is a ball and a hoop. It doesn't even have to be a regulation hoop, unless you plan to use it for "serious" basketball games, as well. You can install a partial basketball court in your own backyard, or even simply install a hoop alongside your driveway. Don't have a way to install a permanent basketball hoop? No problem. Get a portable one. These come in a wide variety of styles and sizes. They're pretty budget friendly, too!

Once you've got your basketball hoop and surface established, simply enjoy it. You can shoot some hoops by yourself, with your kids, or even play a partial game with your pals. Casual basketball is so flexible that you can have fun with it in a variety of ways.

Start 'Em Young
Even little kids can play basketball, and they probably benefit the most from the skills utilized in the game. Start your kids out young by getting them a small, portable basketball hoop and practice simple skills with them like dribbling, passing and shooting. These basketball hoops are designed to grow with your child up to a point, so as your kids grow, the hoop can be gradually raised until they are ready to play basketball with full size equipment.

You can get your children started learning some of the important skills taught by basketball even before you get them a hoop. Motor skills and hand-eye coordination are developed by simply learning to handle a basketball.

Practice Anywhere
One of the greatest things about basketball is how versatile the game can be. Shooting skills can be practiced anywhere-even in the house. You can install small basketball hoops on the back of doors, etc. for casual shooting practice anytime!

The game of basketball has been around for more than 100 years. It can be played virtually anywhere, by just about anyone. So, get out there and shoot some hoops!

THE PSYCHOLOGY OF PHYSICAL FITNESS

Physical fitness is one of the great essentials of match play. Keenness can only be acquired if the physical, mental, and nervous systems are in tune. Consistent and systematic training is essential to a tournament player. Good and healthy diet is considered. To eat is very important.

Regular hours of sleep, and regular, hearty food at regular hours are necessary to keep the body at its highest efficiency. Food is particularly important. Eat well, but do not over-eat, particularly immediately before playing. I believe in a large hearty breakfast on the day of a big match. This should be taken by nine-thirty. A moderate lunch at about one o'clock if playing at three. Do not eat very rich food at luncheon as it tends to slow you up on the court. Do not run the risk of indigestion, which is the worst enemy to dear eyesight. Rich, heavy food immediately before retiring is bad, as it is apt to make you "loggy" on the court the next day.

It is certain injury to touch alcoholic drink in any form during tournament play. Alcohol is a poison that affects the eye, the mind, and the wind three essentials in tennis. Tobacco in moderation does little harm, although it, too, hits eye and wind. A man who is facing a long season of tournament play should refrain from either alcohol or tobacco in any form. Excesses of any kind are bad for physical condition, and should not be chanced.

"Staleness" is the great enemy of players who play long seasons. It is a case of too much tennis. Staleness is seldom physical weariness. A player can always recover his strength by rest. Staleness is a mental fatigue due often to worry or too close attention to tennis, and not enough variety of thought. Its symptoms are a dislike for the tennis game and its surroundings, and a lack of interest in the match when you are on the court. I advocate a break in training at such a time. Go to the theatre or a concert, and get your mind completely off tennis. Do your worrying about tennis while you are playing it, and forget the unpleasantness of bad play once you are off the court. Always have some outside interest you can turn to for relaxation during a tournament; but never allow it to interfere with your tennis when you should be intent on your game. A nice balance is hard to achieve, but, once attained is a great aid to a tournament player.

The laws of training should be closely followed before and after a match. Do not get chilled before a match, as it makes you stiff and slow. Above all else do not stand around without a wrap after a match when you are hot or you will catch cold.

Many a player has acquired a touch of rheumatism from wasting time at the close of his match instead of getting his shower while still warm. That slight stiffness the next day may mean defeat. A serious chill may mean severe illness. Do not take chances.

Change your wet clothes to dry ones between matches if you are to play twice in a day. It will make you feel better, and also avoid the risk of cold.

Tournament players must sacrifice some pleasures for the sake of success. Training will win many a match for a man if he sticks to it. Spasmodic training is useless, and should never be attempted.

The condition a player is, in is apt to decide his mental viewpoint, and aid him in accustoming himself to the external conditions of play.

All match players should know a little about the phenomenon of crowd-psychology since, as in the case of the Church-Murray match I related some time back, the crowd may play an important part in the result.

It seldom pays to get a crowd down on you. It always pays to win its sympathy. I do not mean play to the gallery, for that will have the opposite effect than the one desired.

The gallery is always for the weaker player. It is a case of helping the "under-dog." If you are a consistent winner you must accustom yourself to having the gallery show partiality for your opponent. It is no personal dislike of you. It is merely a natural reaction in favour of the loser. Sometimes a bad decision to one play will win the crowd's sympathy for him. Galleries are eminently just in their desires, even though at times their emotions run away with them.

Quite aside from the effect on the gallery, I wish to state here that when you are the favoured one in a decision that you know is wrong, strive to equalize it if possible by unostentatiously losing the next point. Do not hit the ball over the back stop or into the bottom of the net with a jaunty air of "Here you are." Just hit it slightly out or in the net, and go on about your business in the regular way. Your opponent always knows when you extend him this justice, and he appreciates it, even though he does not expect it. Never do it for effect. It is extremely bad taste. Only do it when your sense of justice tells you you should.

The crowd objects, and justly so, to a display of real temper on the court. A player who loses his head must expect a poor reception from the gallery. Questioned decisions by a player only put him in a bad light with the crowd and cannot alter the point. You may know the call was wrong, but grin at it, and the crowd will join you. These things are the essence of good sportsmanship, and good sportsmanship will win any gallery. The most unattractive player in the world will win the respect and admiration of a crowd by a display of real sportsmanship at the time of test.

Any player who really enjoys a match for the game's sake will always be a fine sportsman, for there is no amusement to a match that does not give your opponent his every right. A player who plays for the joy of the game wins the crowd the first time he steps on the court. All the world loves an optimist.

Healthy Pregnancy

Making healthy choices is extremely important during pregnancy. During the holiday season it can sometimes be hard to keep up because of busy schedules and planned parties. Good nutrition is vital so here are a few tips to keeping healthy during the holiday season.

Stay Hydrated:
Drinking plenty of water has many health benefits but it is especially important during pregnancy. Being dehydrated can cause labor issues as well as other pregnancy complications. Drinking at least eight to ten glasses of water each day should be a priority to stay healthy during pregnancy and prevent dehydration. Keep a water bottle with you at all times during the day to ensure that this amount of water is consumed.

Nutrition:
Nutrition is all about making the proper food choices and ensuring that the body is getting the vitamins and minerals that it needs to function. Body function during pregnancy is enhanced so eating healthy during pregnancy is the best way to stay healthy for yourself and your baby. It is important to reduce junk food and not eat too much. Eating good portions of nutritious food such as whole grains and fruits and vegetables is the ideal way to get high quality food without adding unwanted pounds. The best tip to stay down the right path is to be aware of what you are eating.

Exercise:
Being strong and having a good cardiovascular system are the best ways to help carry a baby as well as care for the child afterwards. Exercise can be difficult to fit in and even more so during the holiday season. Do not stress yourself if you are not able to workout for an hour each day. Do what you can even if it is just a ten minute walk. Find some maternity activewear and start small if you are not used to exercising and always do things that are manageable because overdoing it can cause body temperatures to increase which could possible harm the baby.

Mental Health:
Yes health depends greatly on physical health including what you eat and drink and how much you exercise but this is not everything. Your mental health is also important and should be focused on to ensure a stress free pregnancy. Keep your mind positive and enjoy your pregnancy. Stressing over different things can cause risk during pregnancy. Do everything you can to stop stressing and keep your body, mind and spirit in good health.A healthy pregnancy means a healthy baby so do the best you can to stay hydrated, eat properly and exercise during your entire pregnancy. In addition keep your mental health strong and enjoy your pregnancy and the holiday season.

How To Prevent Teenage Pregnancy

Teenagers are the same as everyone else, because they want to be loved, respected and cared for. Preventing teenage pregnancy does not begin when a child enters puberty, but that is when most adults realize the "sudden onset" of the possibilities of teenage pregnancy. Preventing teenage pregnancy begins when a child is young, because that is when the parents are establishing their relationship with their child.

Parent-Child Relationship Is Critical

Parents are the child's role model. Parents are the ones to establish behavioral standards and guidelines that will both protect and guide the child through adulthood. When a child respects and values his/her parent(s), the child will usually comply with all the parents' desires. When a child fears or has little respect for the parent, what the parent says and/or does has little impact on him/her. The closer the relationship, the more opportunities there are for the parent(s) to talk with their child about anything and everything.

No parent can guarantee that their teenager will not have a child. Teenagers believe they are invincible, that nothing can happen to them; it is a thought process that is part of their developmental process. They do not assess risks accurately and, consequently, do not act in ways to prevent consequences of impulsive choices.

The more open can caring parents are with their children, the less fearful the children or teenagers will be about approaching their parents for help, guidance or support. The absolute worst thing a parent can do, ever, is to be judgmental of who and/or what their children may be or do.

When parents take the initiative of talking with their children, they establish that they are interested in who and what is important to their child. Taking an interest in another person demonstrates respect and caring. When adults are too busy or preoccupied to talk with their children, how can they expect their child to come to them when a situation becomes difficult, confusing, problematic, or overwhelming.

Having a history of working together to solve problems, to anticipate problems and devise preventions or approaches that will not result in difficulties or stress allows the teenager the confidence to talk about serious topics with their parents. Sexuality is a very serious (and interesting) topic for teenagers, because their bodies are changing and they are no longer in control of emotions, sensations, and reactions. Open conversations covering the facts of human maturation, means of practicing birth control, options and consequences of unwanted pregnancies, costs and responsibilities of becoming a parent need to happen before a child becomes capable of becoming a parent.

As uncomfortable as a parent may be discussing these topics with their child, it would be far more uncomfortable to deal with the consequences of becoming a grandparent before you and your child are ready for the responsibilities of a baby.

Know How to Drug Test Your Teen at Home

Are you observing many behavioral and physical changes in your teen? Are you worried that your teenage child is drinking or using illicit drugs? Relax; you are not the only anxious parent with a teenage child who is worried about the teenage kid compromising his future by making poor choices. At the same time, you cannot ignore if you observe alarming changes in your child which cannot be attributed to regular stress of adolescence.

It is always better to talk to him openly about drugs and their harmful consequences and help him avoid making poor choices on such matters. You can start the conversation as early as possible.

Discuss and prepare your teen to stay away from drug abuse
Preparing the teen for making right choices by avoiding drug abuse is a critical and sensitive task. Therefore, you need to maintain an open communication with the teen. Show your concern by explaining him the bad effects of these unhealthy habits.

Dealing with suspicion of teenage drug abuse
Once you see specific behaviors or trends that indicate drug abuse, you may have no choice but to test your teen to confirm the facts. A variety of home drug testing kits are available in the market - you need little or no experience to use them. Urine tests can detect the presence of a drug in the urine sample for 30 days; saliva tests detect drug abuse on that particular day; and hair drug test kits can detect drug abuse up to 90 days. You can choose the test as required.

Choose a reliable test kit
Once the circumstances demand the use of a drug test, choose a reliable test kit to conduct home drug testing. Prefer FDA approved drug testing kits. Confirm they adhere to SAMHSA cut off levels. Multi-panel test kits that detect the presence of various drugs in the given sample are best to use at home. Choose the right multi-panel test kit. A good test for teenagers is something that tests for Marijuana, Cocaine, Methamphetamine, Opiates, Amphetamine and Ecstasy.

Educate yourself about the possible outcomes of the test
Before conducting the test on your teen, you should know how to react on the outcome of the test.

A positive result is surrounded by many issues - the teen may feel guilty, he may even become violent. You need to handle this situation with care. It is better to confirm the initial results using the laboratory tests - there are chances of false positives. On confirming the drug abusing habit, talk to him and explain him about your concern. Support him and help him get rid of the habit. Find ways to control and treat the associated problems with the help of the family physician or experts from drug rehabilitation centers.

On testing negative, praise your teen and encourage him to follow healthy lifestyle. Also, ask him to avoid peer pressure and stay away from harmful substances.

Home drug testing kits are specially designed for parents - simple and easy to use. They are very helpful in controlling and preventing this destructive habit in teens.

How to Win the Lottery With Mathematics

If you truly want to increase your odds of winning the lottery then you need to do two things. Firstly you can increase your odds of winning by working with the laws of probability. To do this is relatively easy. You can also play more lottery numbers than you usually would. Using a mathematical system you can pick more numbers than usual and ensure they all end up together on a ticket.

Let's look at how you can play more lottery number combinations on the lottery without having to spend a fortune to do it. Playing more numbers than normal on the lottery and mixing them so that you have all possible combinations is called 'wheeling'.

Lottery wheeling is a method by which you can choose more numbers than you normally would with a standard ticket. For example, in a 6 from 49 draw (like the UK lottery) you do not pick 6 numbers but pick 7, 8, 9 or whatever amount you can afford to play.

You then create combinations of these numbers so that every possible combination is on a ticket. You thus have a better chance of winning a top prize. If you pick the 6 winning numbers in your combination of numbers then you will definitely win a jackpot prize. Therefore you have a better chance of picking the 6 winners because you are picking more numbers. However, it also means you win more prizes when you do math winning numbers because they tend to be matched on several of your tickets.

When you wheel numbers you must be prepared to buy more tickets. Although you will be required to buy more tickets it is well worth the investment especially if you play as part of a syndicate. For a measly £28 you can wheel an extra number on the UK National Lottery and bring your odds of winning the jackpot prize down from 14 million to 1 to only half a million to 1! Your odds of winning smaller prizes are unbelievably high.

Even though you greatly increase your chances of winning a top prize by using a wheeling system this is not the main purpose of them. When you use wheeling with lottery numbers you ensure you win many smaller prizes when you choose just a few of the winning lottery balls.

When you add a wheeling system to any other system designed to work with the law of probability you increase your odds of winning even more - sometimes unbelievably!

Although there are very sophisticated methods for manipulating the law of probability the easiest one for you to use right now is to pick lottery hot numbers. Hot numbers are those numbers that appear in the lottery more than usual. These numbers come up in lottery draws much more often that the others and they can usually be found under "hot numbers" on a lottery website or by searching the internet.

There are better lottery systems that have been designed which give you unbelievable odds of winning but for now you can use wheeling and probability to increase your chances.

The Secret To Getting Pregnant Fast

Pre-conception care is about both parents getting themselves into optimum physical, biochemical and emotional health before trying to conceive. When I first started researching this concept in 1996 there was very little information around. My GP and my OB-GYN told me that there was no "proof" that pre-conception care was effective, because the cause of non-specific infertility (which was what they told me I had) was unknown. This seemed like false logic to me-just because you don't know the cause of the problem doesn't mean that improving your health won't help!

Despite my doctors' comments, my intuition told me there was more to it. A study reported in the Journal of Nutritional and Environmental Medicine really made me start to believe in the importance of pre-conception care.

In 1995, this Journal published a study that was carried out in the UK by Surrey University and the Association for the Promotion of Preconception Care. In this study, 367 couples were followed for 18 months. Age ranges of the couples were 22 - 45 for the women, and 25 - 59 for the men.

A substantial proportion of the couples had experienced reproductive problems:

  • 37% suffered infertility
  • 38% had previously miscarried
  • 15% had given birth to low birth-weight babies
  • 3% had stillborn babies
  • 2% had given birth to babies with a malformation.

At the completion of the study, which ran over 18 months:

  • 89% of all the couples had given birth.
  • 81% of the previously-infertile couples had give birth.
  • There were no miscarriages. If a group this size were not following any pre-conception care, you would expect at least 70 of the couples to miscarry.
  • There were no perinatal deaths and none of the babies had to be admitted to intensive care.
  • There were no malformations. If a group this size were not following any pre-conception care, you would expect about 12 babies to be born with malformations.

I believed I was onto something. My research indicated that it was important for BOTH parents-to-be to prepare their bodies for conception, not just the mother. It also showed that it takes about four months of diligently applying the program, before your bodies will be ready. This is because it can take up to 116 days for the formation of sperm, and about 100 days for eggs to mature. My experience showed that it was vital for me and my husband to be in optimum health before we were able to conceive.
